Grade R Music

Abacus Kids Academy Verwoerdpark is very excited to have a Grade R music programme as part of our school’s academic curriculum. This unique programme for all the Grade R learners improves school-readiness and other childhood development skills. This fantastic programme is conducted by a very skilled and professional teacher and musician, Ilse-Louise Herholdt (BMUS,MMUS,LTCL) of Power Music Entertainment.

Music activities done in a fun group setting is an extremely joyful experience and children learn the following skills:

  • Reading of music and abstract symbols in music notation
  • Writing of music (notation, rests, note-stave etc)
  • Counting of music and rhythmic skills
  • The ability to play a musical instrument
  • Group participation, cooperation, and teamwork skills
  • Self-discipline
  • Listening skills (to self and others)
  • Develops fine motor skills
  • Hand-eye coordination
  • Right-and-left brain development
  • Develops memory (as music is memorised)
  • Problem solving skills
  • Breath control and lung development
  • Skills in live performance
  • Music appreciation and develops a love for music

The Pow-Wow’s music programme includes a fun-pack (R350.00 – paid once off to the service provider) for every individual which includes the following:-

  •  A brand-new recorder
  • 6 Markers in different colours for notation
  • A marker board with a note stave
  • A sponge for cleaning
  • A rhythm stick for counting and rhythmic development
  • A balloon for breathing exercises
  • A transparent A3 packet with the student’s name
  • Treats and stickers throughout the year
  • A concert at the end of the year.

Ilse-Louise Herholdt (BMUS,MMUS,LTCL) unique Pow-Wow academic music programme has been developed for the purpose of school-readiness through music education. She is highly educated in music and have been part of education for more than 25 years. Ilse-Louise holds a BMUS degree in piano performance (Cum Laude) as well as a master’s degree in performance flute and composition. Furthermore, she obtained three years of training in music pedagogics (University of Pretoria), a teacher’s licentiate through UNISA, a master’s degree in music through WITS over and above her 25 years of teaching experience in group and private music tuition and registered with the South African board of education. Ilse-Louise is a woodwind specialist, a multi-instrumentalist and has loads of stage experience. She is affiliated with various private schools and preschools and her unique programme has been implemented at Leeuwenhof (Afrikaans Private School) and at St John’s College in Houghton as part of their curriculum. Ilse-Louise will also be teaching full-time at St John’s for the months of May, June and July but has specially asked permission from St John’s to continue her teachings at Abacus Kids Academy on a Wednesday morning.
